With smoke and mirrors

[Rahul Gandhi is part of a larger game of deception. Seized by governance confusion and cornered by disgruntled allies, the Congress believes that it’s time — no, not to bring baba upfront — but confuse all with pretense of new imagination]
Rahul Gandhi is like a football star willingly sitting on the substitute benches. His team is conceding goals every few minutes and the score increasingly looks irredeemable. The supporters are anxious, upset, and expectant of a replacement so that their star could run in and dramatically alter the course of the game.
But Rahul is grinning. The team manager, by prior understanding, will not make the change. There is this overarching wisdom that no crisis is big enough to warrant Rahul Gandhi, heir to the Nehru-Gandhi throne, taking a direct role in government and party.
But, for a few hours, on July 19, we saw Rahul himself end the equivocation that has surrounded his role in the party and government for eight years. He announced that a “decision has been taken” of his taking up a “pro-active role”. Whatever that meant.
But before long, the Congress’ senior leaders scotched speculation that the hour of the arrival of Yugpurush is nigh. In another well-known political outfit, such shooting-down of decisions are interpreted as conflict between party and ideological reservoir. But the Congress is judged by entirely different standards. Its internal affairs are probed with awe and respect. Even the most courageous commentators of the land end up appreciating the interests of the first family and they analyse developments with loyalty blinkering their vision.
Therefore, the surfeit of opinion pieces that followed over the week was nothing but exercises in inanity. Some actually reasoned why the Congress’ interests would not be served by Rahul taking the centrestage. It was all “Congress should hold back Rahul” and “Congress shouldn’t hold back Rahul.” They focused on the advantages the Congress may nor may not derive from fielding Rahul at this point in time.
But nobody talked of the country.
Has anybody asked this simple question — what is India to get from this Rahul Gandhi? What outstanding contribution is he about to make to improve life for the 1 billion Indians untouched by the “growth” which some Indians are so proud of?
Why are we avoiding clearing a major confusion that marks us Indians out in the world community of democracies — our obsession with family rule?
If promises were fireworks, then quite a few displays have been staged by Rahul Gandhi already. Just a few days before Rahul Gandhi made that announcement, an attractive woman with a West Delhi accent burst on to the national limelight. Alka Lamba is her name.
This former National Students Union of India activist is known to be a prominent member of Rahul’s cheerleader squad. She may lack a single minute’s experience in upholding the cause of oppressed womanhood, but such is the long hand of Rahul Gandhi that she was send shooting up to the status of “special investigator” when the Guwahati molestation happened.
She was dispatched by air, at the exchequer’s cost, to Guwahati as the de facto head of a National Commission for Women (NCW) delegation, which should normally have been led by a Member of the body. But no, Alka Lamba strutted around Guwahati for a day like she was the King’s emissary, and destroyed the life of the hapless victim by blurting out her name on national television. The Member of the NCW who went along, another political appointee, acted as her dutiful private secretary.
The media went ballistic over her indiscretion, with the upshot that Alka Lamba was dismissed from her assignment. But even, the deference of the national media elite was apparent. Not one of the fiery editorials that flowed in print and on TV asked the key question — how did this upstart woman dramatically rise above her station? At whose urging was this utterly gender-insensitive person given the important job of investigating such a complex crime against womanhood?
Rahul Gandhi of course. It’s not that the commentators didn’t know it. If it’s argued that they were innocent of this fact, then they failed in their duty to dig out the truth. And, before July was out, just as we were secure that Alka Lamba’s career as the face of the Congress party was over, we saw her on one of the TV channels giving lectures on the great legacy of another great Congress achiever — Pratibha Patil!
The channel’s owners and crusading journalists seemed to have made up with Alka Lamba. To recall LK Advani’s famous words, “crawling” is what the Indian media elite excels in when asked to bend.
Of course one could argue that there is no Emergency on. Here, a scene from Sound of Music, one of the all time great movies, flashes in my mind. The young postulant, Maria, was always making mistakes for which the Mother Superior of the nunnery was pulling her up. In one scene she laments, “Whenever I see Mother Superior coming, I start kissing the ground, just to save time”.
A national insult
Rahul Gandhi and his uncles in the Congress high command want the people of India to believe that he is yet to play a direct and pro-active role in running India.
Actually, Rahul, along with a handpicked bunch of cronies, interferes in every aspect — whether manipulating the selection process of an arms deal or posting a favoured bureaucrat — and nobody can do a thing about it. Unlike his father and uncle Sanjay who at least made public displays of their unsuitability for high office, this young man operates from the shadows. Those who are in the know of his operations have their lips sealed.
He is the antithesis of accountability. One hears of scandalous levels of tinkering with rules and regulations in order to satisfy the power-lust and greed of Rahul Gandhi, his friends and near relatives. There are so few people in the know of things that even the slightest hint (leave alone a leak) in the media would expose the source. Besides, in an environment where Rahul Gandhi’s wish is taken as command, we would have to wait till a Deep Throat emerges.
Since 2004, the affairs of India are being guided by a band of cynical men and women whose minds flow in cold, cruel directions. During their eight years out of power (1996-2004), the supreme leaders of the Congress party made a solemn promise to themselves. Never again should they lose power. Every rule, institution, tradition, dignity and cherished value of nationhood has been demolished just to keep this band in power.
It’s ironical that Rahul Gandhi’s name should be breathed in connection with the youth of India. The second decade of the 21st century is one which should have seen India making proper use of the demographic dividend that Mother Nature has handed this nation. It’s seldom that this manna of having a nation where under-35-year-olds make up more than 80 per cent of the population. Our government, indeed the entire polity, should by now have put proper programmes and schemes into action to give the youth of India the chance to channelise their energies and creativity to useful purposes.
Rahul Gandhi and his friends ensure that the opposite happens. He, Alka Lamba and the rest are actually echoes from the past. They are co-optees of the same rotten political culture in which Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi thrived. They ensure that the good are driven out of public life, even prevented from hoping for a fair chance to have a go in politics.
And yes, it makes no difference whether they function in the open or in the shadows.

Stolen Indian antiques seized in New York
The Hindu File photo shows Subhash Chandra Kapoor being brought to the Judiial Magistrate court in Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu.
Immigration and customs authorities in New York City have seized over $20 million worth of antiques stolen from Indian temples and hawked to major U.S. museums, from a Manhattan gallery run by an Indian, Subhash Chandra Kapoor (63).
Mr. Kapoor, who is currently in prison in Chennai following his arrest in Germany in October after Interpol issued a ‘Red Corner’ notice for smuggling, was also slapped with an arrest warrant by U.S. authorities for possession of stolen property.
According to a statement by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) group, agents on Thursday seized three Chola period bronzes, which were “suspected of having been stolen directly from temples in the Tamil Nadu region of India.”
These bronze statues include a sculpture, depicting Parvati, from the Chola period, valued at nearly $2.5 million; a sculpture depicting Sivagami Amman, said to also be worth over $2.5; and a sculpture depicting Murugan, reportedly worth over $3.5 million. All three pieces are visible on the Tamil Nadu police website and on the Interpol Stolen Works of Art Database, officials said.
Responding to a query from The Hindu on the current status of the seized items and whether they would be returned to India, a representative of HSI said that the antiques have been moved to a government facility where they will be preserved.
“This case is still under investigation — once the agents and prosecutors determine the rightful owners of these artefacts, ICE will repatriate the items to its rightful owners,” the official said, noting that HSI special agents were still itemising the artefacts seized.
In addition HSI special agents also seized a sandstone statue depicting Kubera, the chief of the Yakshas, from the Indian Gupta period; a grey schist statue depicting Herkules-Vajrapani from the Kandahran Kushan period; and a sculpture depicting Shakyamuni Buddham from the Indian Chola period.
Following a tip from the Indian Consulate in February 2007 HSI special agents had already seized, by the end of January 2012, “dozens of antiquities with an estimated value of nearly $10 million.”
The Consulate had advised HSI that an import-export company was expecting the arrival of a shipment containing seven crates manifested as “Marble Garden Table Sets.” The Consulate believed these crates contained stolen Indian antiquities, the HSI said.
The antiquities seized earlier this year based on that tip included a five-foot-tall head of a Buddha weighing approximately £1,600 and a life-sized stone figure weighing approximately £500. Both items were seized from a storage unit allegedly leased by Mr. Kapoor in New York, HSI officials noted.
James Hayes Jr., special agent in charge of HSI New York, commented on the latest seizures, saying, “The statues and sculptures recovered today are worth millions in the antiquities business, but they are priceless to the nations that they were robbed from.”
Does this mean Vishkanya has one foot to the grave?
New Delhi: Pushing for Rahul Gandhi’s active role in Parliament, 10 Congress MPs have written to party chief Sonia Gandhi suggesting his appointment as the Leader of the Lok Sabha, saying it was the “need of the hour” to create a “sense of confidence” among the countrymen.
In their joint letter, the Lok Sabha MPs have said that as Leader of the House, Rahul would be able to speak “dynamically” on issues concerning the masses and inspire fellow Parliamentarians to follow his example, willingly and cheerfully.
“We think it is the need of the hour that Rahul should play a larger and proactive role in Parliament as the party is facing many challenges inside and outside Parliament,” the letter said.
The MPs felt that Rahul would be able to strike a rapport with the Opposition and allies in a more effective manner.
“There indeed are many leaders but our country with nearly 50 per cent youth population demands for a young and dynamic leader. And over these years, Rahul has emerged as the most accepted youth leader in this country…He can attract youth and common masses which will pave way for better results for our party,” they said.
They also said his active role in Parliament would create a “sense of confidence” among the countrymen. “This way, we feel that he would inspire fellow Parliamentarians to follow his example, willingly and cheerfully.”
The post of Leader of the House in the lower house fell vacant after Pranab Mukherjee was nominated by UPA as its Presidential candidate.

Final solution: Disaster named Rahul
July 23, 2012
Khurshid stated the sordid truth by highlighting that Rahul has failed to provide ‘ideological direction’.
he theatre of the absurd around Rahul Gandhi is stretching itself so intensely that even the cliché is breaking down. The theatrics have started again with breakneck speed. The same dramatis personae, the same sequences, the same denials, but this time the finale appears full of possibilities.
I am talking about the periodic Rahul alerts, directed, I presume towards the sitting and notional Prime Minister. Since the last four years or so, the nation has witnessed what appears to be a determined and orchestrated campaign by Sonia Gandhi and her dedicated sycophants and mouthpieces, such as Digvijay Singh, Salman Khurshid, Janardan Dwivedi, to build up a sustained momentum of pressure within the Congress party and government to get Rahul Gandhi closer to the Prime Ministerial throne of India.
I say throne, because that is how the nouveau royale of the Nehru-Gandhi-Maino famiglia perceive themselves in India. They cannot, for obvious reasons, claim this privilege among the nobility in Europe, even Italian. So India, with its white worship, is the best bet to fantasize and propagate their illusory royalty. And the trained and tested sycophants in our country, adept at this skill for centuries, do everything possible to reaffirm their fantasy, while extracting their own pound of flesh in the transaction.
Spare us, oh, please spare us from having to endure the repetitiveness and boredom of the stale old script inflicted upon us for the last four years. It predictably runs like this. First, the privileged and specially anointed sycophants/mouthpieces articulate to some branch of the media that Rahul Gandhi must move closer to the Big Chair. Then there is a farcical scolding meted to these sycophants by some other chosen spokespersons of the Congress, who state their disassociation from the remarks, and pretend to distance the party from them. Oftentimes, as witnessed during the last four years, these periodic alerts are followed by the Prime Minister stating in his most gratuitous tone that the time is indeed ripe for Rahul Gandhi to move into higher political responsibilities. And then, the curtain falls to get the props ready for the next act.
This time the script had a slight difference. To begin with, Salman Khurshid, the Anglicised and Oxford educated Law Minister, uttered some strange language. One would not only expect him to have considerable mastery over English vocabulary and its appropriate usage, but would also expect him to know the comfort levels of English that the aam politician can absorb with clarity, instead of hurling mysterious metaphors or complex words of Italian origin. He stated that the root of the problems plaguing the Congress was the lack of “ideological direction” from its next generation leader Rahul Gandhi. “Until now,” he said, “we have only seen cameos of his thought and ideas like democratising elections to the Youth Congress. But he has not weaved all of this into a grand announcement. This is a period of waiting.” He continued that “we need a new ideology to meet contemporary challenges … to be given by our next generation leader Rahul Gandhi to move forward. We have to be clear about what we want to go ahead with in the next elections… The fact is that he is undoubtedly and unquestionably the number two leader in the party. Yet he has not taken up the mantle or accepted a functional responsibility. He is so far not willing to accept the number two position. In such a situation, we have to wait. This is a waiting time.” He continued with rather supercilious judgment, which undoubtedly must have had the right blessings, that “In UPA II, governance and politics have all got intermingled. The political props have got mixed up. It’s a scattered situation. The stage has to be set up again and only the Congress president can do it. She is the one who has the stature. The Prime Minister can then run the government, but he cannot set the stage.”
Bravo, Mr Khurshid, you’ve explained it all to us with complete honesty — all that is contradictory and dysfunctional in your government leading it to nowhere, as well as your sycophancy and your slavishness to dynastic rule. You don’t need an Opposition to tear you down. You’ve done it yourself. You can say whatever you like to deny your statements, that you were quoted out of context, or that they were misquoted — two tired clichés that have also become an integral part of the theatre of the absurd — but you have stated the sordid truth.
I realise that you got trapped in your use of the rather pretentious word “cameo”, and had to spend considerable time to wriggle out of it before your own party and the media. The dictionary suggests that the word “cameo” has several meanings, namely, a medallion, as on a brooch or ring, with a profile head carver in relief (you couldn’t have meant this); or a single brief dramatic scene played by a well known actor in a film or TV show (did you mean this?); or a short literary work or dramatic sketch (not likely that you meant this). It also says that “cameo” is from Italian “cameo”, of uncertain origin (surely, you couldn’t have meant this).
Anyhow, this time the Prime Minister, a significant dramatis persona in this theatre of the absurd, has not yet spoken his usual script, that he is waiting anxiously for Rahul to join the government, words that have the unmistakable and sinister overtones of the classic children’s poem, “Will you walk into my parlour, said the spider to the fly.” This time it was Rahul’s mother Sonia Gandhi, the president of the Congress, with her nouveau royale fantasies who spoke out and enlightened our country that Rahul Gandhi alone will decide on whether he will play a larger role in the party. Digvijay Singh, who had retreated into the wilderness for a while after the great UP dream was shattered, decided that he must not be beaten by Salman Khurshid at what was hitherto his monopoly. He made it a point to pipe up and say, “I am absolutely sure that Rahul will play a much more proactive role in mainstream of Congress party. Let the Presidential and Vice Presidential polls get over.”
Mr Khurshid, you are a wealthy gentleman and a fairly successful member of the Bar. Why are you trying to surpass Digvijay Singh in this squalid competition of sycophancy? I feel ashamed of you.
And finally, the failed prince has reiterated on 19 July, that he would “play (a) more proactive role in the party and the government. The decision has been taken, the timing is up to the leadership.” The dying Congress party has found its Final Solution, but the Prime
Minister has not yet spoken. In my next piece, I will discuss Rahul’s qualifications for his hereditary entitlement to being India’s Prime Minister.

Rahul Gandhi – Sukanya Case: Amazing Media Silence
It is amazing that despite the affair in question is a grist in the critics’ mill no media dared to highlight the court direction. Are they of the view that the breaking news repeatedly then ads and so on will not work out if pertained to Gandhi nehru clan?
If this is the case of either Modi or Advani they same crafty media would have been beating the bush on umpteen times a day and created sensational. What is imperative is that it has become a scarce for a media with spine, Or moneyed or those with patronage of aam and aadhmies drawing 80,000 pm but eat subsidized food in parliament house in IRR canteen foot by egalitarian common is above law? They can do any crime without impunity and the fourth pillar of the so called democracy too will go connived?
Rahul Gandhi is a ‘Desh putra”, whatever it means. No one wants to touch him including the opposition. There in lies the secret. Why the BJP, Communits and other parties are observing a silence? God knows.
May be they nethas are paid off to observe silence. But then what about Media crooksie our channel TVs.
urbanlamaMarch 03, 2011 4:32 PM
why is opposition playing silence not only in this but all the recent issue.
there are so much of material the party like bjp can make good use of, but all they are involved in are useless antics.
and some media will do help bjp in the process. but why are they behaving sissy is beyond my belief.
this is interesting.
I wish to know, how authentic the girl’s photo is? as the family of Sukanya, goes missing, but the same news of videos, photos and wordings are repeated. What is the source for photo, address, story and other details ? the story narrates, they approached president, sonia, etc., but who provided the information of all these incidents to whom and how these are spread is a question mark? Thats the reason, media, opposition parties are mum on this matter..
I am surprised to read this blog!! Though I actually try to get all the information , but I missed it. As a part of media, I just wants to say, that it is true to the some extend that media now a days lost its relevancy, and became a lapdog of the every kind of power, but there has exception also. We should not loose the faith on Media, may the number is less, but still they exists.

ha ha most of the comments from anonymous. This person is so afraid not to want write even his name but talking like Chandra shekhar azad,
Bull shit. How any body can take your favor with out having any proof? tomorrow you will start to say that man mohan singh is the person behind Raja for all the corruption, how any body will believe? You will hv to show some proofs dear.
It is amazing that the girl was produced in court and she confessed nothing of that sort happened. The court slammed a fine of 25 lacs to the litigant. under this circumstance, I also opined that had it not be a fact that the allegations were true how could she have been produced at the dictum of the court and that fact I mailed to the author too for his hot mail. Hence, no merit on beating the bush
AnonymousSeptember 04, 2011 1:56 PM
This allegation is baseless, has no autencity, the picture is so made up and looks like some sex worker, with red lipstick. This is a well planned consipracy to defame the potentials of the forthcoming PM- Rahul Gandhi.moroever, he’s been fighting for the vicitmized women.

another website that takes a cake on pseudo-intellectual secular mindset is undoubtedly http://www.write2kill.in
Always downplaying Congress’s sins and highlighting BJp’s ‘atrocities’…so typical of these secular types.
Most contributors come with a lot of ego and pomp there. however, other sections apart from politics are quite interesting…

IN continuation of my above post on the article on Kiran Bedi on the site-
wonder if and when these guys will have guts to write about the mystery behind Sonia’s undisclosed illness and her disappearance during most crucial period in India. can they pressurise their favorite govt to release swiss bank acct holder’s name? How about writing abt Amar Singh’s buyers of votes?
I bet not. it takes guts to expose or even write about the biggeset corrupt in the country and very easy to target much less powerful people like Kiran Bedi and team Anna who dont have wealth and power to buy the seculars.
Media’s silence in this case is a real shock…… The TV channels nowadays flashes all kind of nonsensically made up stories like “SWARG KA RASTA”; “ALIEN’S ATTACK” and so on…. and choose to ignore the issues that deserve people’s attention.
And I thought media has some REAL POWER ……
AnonymousFebruary 11, 2012 11:43 PM
What you are talking of is India TV considering it does not even qualify as a news channel its more of a entertainment channel…and media still does have REAL POWER however due to the prevalent media-corporate-government nexus it uses its power for the benefit of the elitists..also we are so comfortable where we are that we do nothing apart from criticizing every authority.. its high time we get proactive to stop this nonsense… people complain of india tv being sloppy.. but do they stop watching it?? no… due to its rising trp’s these channels have more audacity to come up with more such content…

50-lakh penalty slapped on petitioner out to defame Rahul
It’s totally clear that center and opposition both goes hand in hand in doing every corrupt deed and fooling the people of India. That’s why everyone is quite because they all know each others deep secrets and are only concerned in keeping their image clean.
Its time that people get out of their shells and open their eyes to the truth.
AnonymousNovember 22, 2011 1:19 AM
kindly visit the website to know the truth. I know no one will be willing to extend any benefit of doubt to rahul gandhi as it is now considered patriotic to bash the nehru gandhi family. A new fab i must say. nevertheless at the risk of sounding very un-patriotic and follower of a dynasty. i would like to post it and i would urge anyone who has even little sense to at least look up the net before accepting the things on face value. I mean u need to do this only if u really care about the thing, If u want to follow a fashion of being a pseudo patriotic then close ur eyes and believe anything that is shelled out to u….. ur opinion doesn’t matter anyway
Its heart wrenching to see what has happened to the media of today. I came across this news today, and was astounded. Such injustice and negligence on the part of everyone, the opposition and the media, is absolutely horrifying. How can then we feel safe if nobody, not even the god-damned news channels don’t report the bloody truths???
last year, I was shocked to see how our media handled the Baba Ramdev’s outcry and it’s aftermath, trying to shove dirt on his image. It is amazing to see in a country of such glorious freedom fighters, the advent of whom hasn’t even passed a century, that helping our own countrymen and trying to bring out the truth costs one more than he can imagine. I feel absolutely ashamed today.

1) How much can we rely upon these blogs? who would check the credibility of the same…
2) Being from the media industry myself i am totally aware about how power politics play in the media.. however all the news that goes through is always supported by documentary evidence. The same is not true with blogs….. this news surely has a wide chance of being true… but it will be believed only if it supported by some documentary evidence…
3) Blogs are read by very few.. thus reach of such information is generally limited than other forms of media…
4) Further, such news matters a lot in the decisions the voters make, thus it is imperative that it reaches the masses. Therefore we as citizens should come ahead and give something that is concrete enough so that the mainstream media is forced to take this up seriously. If the blogger is genuine, it is his duty to substantiate this information with documentary evidence
Next time the media discusses and gets on to the preaching alter regarding the state of MP’s and MLA’s especially they might do it with reference to the “porngate” issue… any one of the panelist must also counter-question the media about their silence on Sukanya issue…
here is the truth, the order also says to take action against website spreading incorrect information.
@ sanju thomas,do you think people’re stupid to file petition in court knowing the consequences.?
You have no idea what this government can do or has done this far.i’m a resident of madhya pradesh..

The only difference is she was molested physically, and we on the other hand,financially..

Today, Social Media has just not slapped Rahul Gandhi but all those politicians who are involved in wrong doing.
I am very pleased and hopping, all Patriots will keep expressing their view and concerns through social media until the whole rotten Dynasty will not collapse completely.
Moreover, this battle is not Congress vs BJP but it’s leading towards Truth vs falsehood, hallowed vs Corruption and therefore BJP corruption brigade (Top brass) are also likely face significant resistance from patriots.
As Congress is now going, we all should be more careful and vigilant.
That is the beginning of the end of the most tyrannical Nehru-Gandhi dynasty
